The Virginia Association for Hospices and Palliative Care advocates for quality care for all persons with life limiting illnesses. VAHPC  promotes hospice and palliative care education and ethical practices, and serves as a united voice and resource for its members.

32nd Annual Clinical Conference: May 10-11, 2012 

"Keeping our Promise: Assuring our Future"
 
A full day of pre-conference seminars  are scheduled for May 10, 2012.
 
Hospice Fundamentals
Back by popular demand this day-long seminar is designed for team members with less than two years hospice experience. Participants will learn the fundamentals of end-of-life care to ensure that the ethos of hospice survives the challenges of the regulatory and economic environments hospice programs currently face. Faculty are all experienced in providing hospice care in Virginia, topics and further details are included in the registration process. Up to six (6) CE credits are available for eligible RNs and LCSWs.Register now!
 
In addition, we have two half-day seminars:
 
Hospice Billing Updates from CIGNA (CGS)
Shonda Brummer, Senior Provider Relations Representative at our fiscal intermediary CGS, will update hospices in a half-day pre-conference seminar focusing on recent and future billing changes for Medicare Certified hospices. A summary of common biling errors and how to prevent/resolve them will also be discussed. Other topics include a discussion of recent CMS regulatory changes that impact submission of claims, including changes to hospice discharge billing, and the discontinuation of hospice add-on bills.
 
In addition, CMS-issued clarifications on billing Medicare when the face-to-face encounter is not timely, procedural changes associated with the CGS ADR process, and important administrative reminders will also be addressed. Top hospice billing errors identified by CGS, and ways for hospices to avoid them along with critcal hospice billing resources available from theCGS website will also be shared. While this session is designed to enhance an intermediate hospice billers' knowledge, all billers and administrators involved with Medicare billing and billing processes will benefit from this session. The seminar will be held from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon, refreshments will be served, but lunch is not included in the registration fee. Register Now!
 
Interdisciplinary in End-of-Life Care: A Skills Intensive for Social Workers, Counselors and Chaplains
Gary Gardia, M Ed, LCSW, a much sought after educator and award-winning social worker will conduct a half-day pre-conference seminar. The purpose of this seminar is to guide Social Workers, Counselors and Chaplains working with people who are seriously ill to develop skills necessary for effective intervention with patient and family systems. Cases that are considered complex and ethically challenging will be incorporated throughout, as a means of applying essential skills. Up to three (3) CE Credits will be available for eligible social workers. The seminar will be held from 1:00pm until 4:30pm, refreshments wil be served, but lunch is not included in the registration fee. Register Now!
 
May 11, 2012: Keeping Our Promise: Assuring Our Future
 
We are delighted to have Gary Gardia as our keynote speaker. Gary is an MSW, certified thanatologist, NHPCO Heart of Hospice award winner, author, trainer and, in the best sense of the word, an agitator. Gary does not shy away from controvertial issues and loves to stir up hospice audiences by exploring new ways to "do hospice". This event will be held May 11, 2012 . The closing plenary on an essential end-of-life care topic, HOPE, is presented by a successful palliative care team and will be followed by an ecumenical Belssing of Hands ceremony.You can register now for the conference!

Techno-Talks, A Forum for Hospice Leaders

 
 
 VAHPC is happy to announce the implementation of Techno-Talks, an opportunity for hospice leaders across the Commonwealth to participate in peer- to-peer conversations about current topics and concerns in hospice care. Using the latest technology to bring participants together, the conversations will be open to voting delegates of VAHPC hospice provider members and will require registration through the association website.
The registration process will ensure that we have a closed forum in which members feel safe to engage in an open discussion on all topics. Some topics will be linked to efforts ongoing by VAHPC, others will focus on newsworthy issues and we will also schedule sessions based on your requests.Register for the first Techno-Talk here , to be held February 7, 2012 You may also register for March, April and May events.Participation is limited to the first 15 registrants.
